Montgomery is a part of the 16 county Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington MSA and is located in the northeast corner of Le Sueur County. The city is centrally located between two major markets, approximately both 36 miles from Burnsville to the north and Mankato to the south. Montgomery is located on State Highways 13 and 21 and just 15 miles from Interstate 35. Montgomery benefits from its proximity to the Twin Cities, while offering residents and businesses a small town atmosphere. Traffic counts on Trunk Highway 13/21 averaged 6,500 within town daily, 4,800 heading north out of town while it was only 3,200 trips heading south of town in 2002.

Montgomery is also accessible to rail and a quick route to the area airports. The Union Pacific Railroad runs a spur from Montgomery to Merriam Junction, just south of Shakopee where goods can then be transported throughout the world. Nearby airports include the Faribault Municipal Airport (21 miles), Le Sueur Municipal Airport (18 miles), Mankato Regional Airport (36 miles)and the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (50 miles).
