Residential Rental Properties

Rental Program

Any building which is rented in whole or in part as a rental dwelling unit within the City of Montgomery must have a rental license prior to the property being occupied. In order to obtain a rental license, the rental units must comply with the Residential Rental Property Maintenance and Licensing Code of Montgomery’s City Code. The main objective of the City's is to ensure the rental unit is decent, safe and sanitary.

Obtaining a Rental License

  • Complete and Submit a Rental License Application by the property owner
  • Payment of the appropriate fee
  • The property must comply with the minimum property standards of the ordinance verified by a property inspection. The property owner is responsible to schedule the inspection with the Building Inspector.
  • The rental license must be issued prior to occupancy of any residential rental property.

Renewing a Rental License

Rental licenses are valid for a period of one (1) year. The renewal process is the same as the original licensing which will require an application, fees, and inspection of the rental property prior to expiration of the existing license.  Renewal applications shall be submitted at least thirty (30) days prior to the rental license expiration date.
