Animal Control

The Montgomery Police Chief is designated as the Animal Control Officer for the City of Montgomery. The Montgomery Police Chief and it's Officers under the Chief's command shall have the power to enforce all provisions of City Code Section 1010.01.

Following are some of the basic animal control guidelines.  More information and complete details can be found in Montgomery City Code 1010.01 found in Chapter 10.

1. No person shall keep, maintain, or otherwise house more than a total of four (4) domestic animals over the age of four (4) months within any household in the City of Montgomery unless authorized elsewhere in the City Code.

2. Running at Large Prohibited - it shall be unlawful for the dog or cat of any person who owns, harbors, or keeps a dog or cat, or the parents or the guardian of such person under 18 years of age, to run at large. Dogs or cats on a leash and accompanied by a responsible person shall be permitted in streets or on public land unless the City has posted an area with signs reading "Dogs or Cats Prohibited".

3. It shall be unlawful for any person to keep or harbor a dog which habitually barks or cries.  Habitual barking shall be defined as barking for repeated intervals of at least three minutes with less than one minute of interruption. Such barking must also be audible off the owner's or caretaker's premises.

4. The owner of any animal or person having the custody or control of any animal shall be responsible for cleaning up any feces of the animal and disposing of such feces in a sanitary manner whether on their own propery, on the property of others or on public property.

5. All dogs over the age of four months kept,harbored, or maintained by their owners in the City, shall be licenses and registered with the City. Applications can be picked up at the Montgomery Police Department or City Hall during normal business hours or you can download a copy here.  Application Forms must be dropped off in person at the Montgomery Police Department or at City Hall.  The cost is $5.00 per dog tag and proof of vaccination for rabies and distemper is required upon receipt of  your application.
