Water Information

Water Filtration Plant

In 2005 the City of Montgomery built a new Water Filtration Plant. The plant consistently removes 98% of the iron (red stuff) and manganese (black stuff) from Montgomery's water. The plant also removes radium. The plant also chlorinates and fluoridates to the water to enhance public health.  The plant provides some of the best tasting and safest drinking water in Minnesota.

The water hardness of Montgomery's water is 21 gpg. (21 grains per gallon)

The Water Filtration Plant has the ability to produce over a million gallons of filtered water per day and is sized to handle significant population growth.

The Water Filtration Plant has a large 600 kilowatt generator which ensures citizens will have water during power outages.

Water Tower

Water HydrantThe City of Montgomery built its 500,000 gallon elevated water storage tank in 2005. This storage provides the necessary degree of water pressure and ensures an adequate supply of water for responding to fire, even during the dog days of summer when water demand is greatest.

Wells

The City of Montgomery utilizes four (4) wells to supply the entire system with water. The wells range from 529 to 531 feet deep that draw water from the Franconia-Ironton-Galesville aquifer.

Additional Water Meters

A second water meter may be installed in homes or businesses to measure outdoor water usage. Currently each new residence built in the City shall have two (2) water meters.  The meter that measures the water usage that will enter the municipal sanitary sewer system will be charged sanitary sewer charges.

Hydrant Flushing

The process of flushing hydrants prevent buildup of deposits in water mains. When flushing hydrants, homes down stream of the hydrant may see redness for a short time in the water. The opening of the hydrant causes a water scouring effect that cleans the lines and insures a proper operation and longer lasting water system.  Residents in this area may experience some temporary discoloration of their water during this period. To prevent staining of laundry, water quality should be checked by allowing the cold water to run for a few minutes. Running the water will generally clear up any water quality problems.  If stains from the water appear on laundered clothes, do not put the clothes in the dryer, as this will set the stains. Washing the clothes again usually will remove any stains.

Watering Restrictions

Water SprinklerConserving water is always a good idea and everyone is encouraged to use water efficiently.  However, the City of Montgomery currently HAS watering restrictions 2022.

Wellhead Protection

Wellhead Protection is a way to prevent drinking water from becoming polluted by managing potential sources of contamination in the area which supplies water to a public well. Much can be done to prevent pollution, such as the wise use of land and chemicals. Public health is protected and expense of treating polluted water or drilling new wells is avoided though wellhead protection efforts.

The public water system utilized by the residents of Montgomery is required to delineate, inventory, and manage an inner wellhead management zone. Additionally, the city must also create a formal wellhead protection plan. The wellhead protection planning process itself is broken down into two parts. Part 1 involves delineation of the wellhead protection area and drinking water supply management area, as well as an assessment of the well(s) vulnerability. Part 2 involves the creation of the wellhead protection plan itself, including goals, objectives, plan of action, evaluation program, and contingency plan.

The City of Montgomery had adopted a Wellhead Protection Plan and is currently working towards achieving the various goals set forth in it.
