Permit Process

You have determined that the City of Montgomery requires a building, electrical, or zoning permit for the project you will be doing on your property. The following is meant to assist and guide you with the process.

Obtain a Building Permit

Complete the appropriate building permit application BEFORE you beginning working on the proposed project. Homeowners are typically allowed to perform the work on the building they occupy after the building permit is issued. A certified contractor can also submit the building permit for you. By state law commercial projects are required to have a design professional prepare the project documents.

Submit to City Hall

Drop off the completed building permit to City Hall.  Some permits like window replacement, roofing, and siding can be issued immediately.  Others will need to be reviewed by the Building Inspector for building code compliance, City Staff for zoning compliance, or the City Engineer for grading and other various components to the project.

Plan Reviews

Most projects require a plan review, which require staff to verify the plans comply with specific code requirements. This review minimizes misunderstanding and construction delays for the projects. These reviews may take up to few days to a couple of weeks depending on the scale of the proposed project. These time frames are based on the project submittal being complete and submitted with no major code violations. For very large commercial projects it may take longer than the typical time frame.

Permit Issuance

Upon completion of the plan review, a representative of the City will contact the applicant that their permit is ready.  You will need to pick up the permit from City Hall and pay ALL required fees prior to issuance. Projects commenced or completed without the proper permit may be subject to double the normal fee.
