Population and Housing

Montgomery has a population, according to the most recent data, of 3,249.  The city has 1,335 housing units.  Homeownership in Montgomery is 77%.  The most common housing unit, 81% are single unit structures. 

Age Distribution

The median age of Montgomery is 38.7 years and 73.3% of the population is older than 18.  Just over 13% of the population is over 65 and 26% of the population is under 18.

Education

93.9% of the population in the City of Montgomery hold a high school degree or equivalent with 13.3 % holding a bachelor's degree or higher.

Employment

Most residents 15 and older, 74.1% work as employees in private companies.  4.2% of the population aged 15 and older, own and operate their own incorporated business, where 4.8% own and operate their own business that has not been incorporated.  

23% of the workforce is manufacturing and 16% work in construction trades.  Education jobs account for 18% and retail and arts, amusement, recreation, and food account for 10.8% and 10.1% of the worforce respectively. 

Ethnicity

2019 Census statistics indicated that the racial makeup of the city was 87% White, 2% African American, 1% Native American, and 4.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6% of the population.

Gender

According to the latest Census information, the City of Montgomery’s gender distribution is 46% male to 54% female, which differs from the make up of Le Sueur County. Le Sueur County’s gender distribution is 50% male to 50% female. This ratio also differs from the state and national distribution of 50% male to 50% female for the State of Minnesota and 49% male to 51% female for the nation as a whole.

Income

The US Census Bureau estimates the median family income in Montgomery is $55,337.

Travel Time to Work

As a city within Le Sueur County, Montgomery now is considered a part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) by the federal Office of Management and Budget meaning at least 25% of the county’s workforce commutes to the “core counties” of the MSA. According to the 2019 Census data, residents of Montgomery traveled in average of 31.2 minutes to their place of employment.
